Atal Bihari
Vajpayee

“Let me make one thing clear. I have never considered mere survival in power as any achievement, just as I have never seen coming to power as an achievement in itself.”

Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been a great source of inspiration to me. A generation leader, visionary, and game-changer, he has played a pivotal role in making India what it is today. Honesty and conviction being central to his idea of work and leadership, he has given me essential life lessons in the five decades that he has been in the political scene of India. He has redefined how we look at governance now, and he has proved that governance could be carried out coherently and honestly. By forming Bhartiya Jan Sangh and Bhartiya Janata Party, he has transformed the political picture in India.

Needless to say that his work, along with millions of people, has inspired me and given me a direction in life. His works like “Unchai” and “Aao Phir Se Diya Jalaayein” have left a very positive influence on my mind. He was jailed for some time when he emerged as one of India’s Freedom Movement protesters. In 1957, When he was elected for Lok Sabha, he was appreciated by then-president Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for his oratorical skills. He also saw a great leader in him who could potentially revolutionise the political scene for the nation. He has always been exceptionally brilliant with his oratorical skills but what has registered in my mind for good was his speech at the United Nations where he proved his skills are nothing but stellar.

His leadership was widely appreciated by the country and the people surrounding him were always in awe of him because of his smart and logical approach towards politics. His speech before the fall of the 13-month-government was considered to be one of the most powerful speeches in the history of Parliament. Under his leadership, India also conducted a series of Nuclear tests in May 1998 in Pokhran.

Overall, India saw a better face of governance and politics on the developmental front under his leadership.

During his tenure, he also tried fostering relationships with Pakistan through the Lahore Bus Yatra. His monumental success in approving the Chandrayaan-1 Mission On August 15 in 2003, has made records in history. Ever since then, he has become an inspiring personality for the posterity of scientists. He has shown exemplary work at handling the attacks on the Indian Parliament and the IC814 hijack, gaining popularity and appreciation from all over the country.

He played an instrumental role in connecting the highways of the country through the Golden Quadrilateral project. He also proved his immaculate workmanship in raising the nation’s GDP and working towards developing the country’s economic growth. He also introduced the New Telecom Policy during his tenure, which boosted the telecom penetration from 3% in 1999 to 75% in 2014.

Overall, his journey has been very inspiring, and through his work, he has raised leaders like Vasundhara Raje Ji, Late Pramod Mahajan Ji, Shivraj Singh Chauhan Ji, who have been carrying on this legacy. His receiving the Bharat Ratna for his service symbolises his priceless contribution to the country’s development.
